We believe that these middle years between primary and secondary school are the years when character is given the shape of personality and confidence is turned into competence. We believe that a child's discovery of herself is the purpose of education. Independence and the capacity to need and care for others are the outcome of that discovery. We believe that there aren't enough small and simple things in a child's life today. Not enough things that can be taken apart and understood. We believe that children learn people first and things second. North Country Treetops is, in one sense, a retreat, a Walden Pond for children, a place where life is simple enough to make sense and to give a child the confidence that he can find sense. In many ways our environment is our curriculum. The seasons provide a natural change of pace. In September and October we harvest our crops and our poultry. In November we bring all of our parents here for a Thanksgiving feast. In December we split wood for our hearths and for the maple-sugaring that will come later on. In January and February we open our ski hill and clear the pond for skating. In March we plant seeds in our greenhouse. In April we harvest maple syrup and in May we turn over the earth for a new planting. Our summer children put out the seedlings the winter children have started and tend them through July and August. Then we begin again.
