Night Riding

If you do choose to ride at night, understand that you have to adjust your riding habits to compensate for the lack of daylight. Everything is a lot harder to see and identify at night. Stay on trails you know. It's not a good time to go exploring or get lost far form home base. Be aware that there may be other things on the trail besides snowmobiles. Many animals are much more active after dark, and the majority of trail grooming is done at night. Groomers usually have flashing warning lights, but animals don't.

Any time you ride at night, make sure that you do not overdrive your headlight. If you can't stop in the distance illuminated by your headlight, you are going too fast.

When you do stop at night, get off the trail if at all possible. It's a good idea to carry a small red warning light, preferably one that flashes, to be activated and clipped onto the last snowmobile in the group while you are stopped along the trail. This light will help other riders see you from a longer distance, allowing them to slow down while they pass you.
